The first question is whether the special shape should read as a field or a feature. For example, a larger terra cotta hexagon tile suits field applications across larger surfaces, while zellige trapezoid mosaics suit backsplashes, niches, and accent surfaces where the angular geometry is the focal point. Formats like Stars and Cross, Oaxaca, and Toltec produce patterns through tile sets, so consider both the layout and scale before selecting a special shape.

The advantages of special shape tiles are primarily visual; these tiles are literal works of art. Hexagon and trapezoid formats introduce geometry that a standard square or rectangular tile can't, adding pattern and depth through interesting grout lines. The tiles also define zones naturally, making them well-suited to shower floors, niches, and accent walls where a change in geometry signals a change in space.

Cleaning tiles in special shapes is just like any tile care and maintenance. Follow the guidelines outlined in our installation and care guides, according to the specific collection. Always use a pH-neutral cleaner and avoid acidic or abrasive products that damage glazes, strip sealers, or etch natural stone. Special shape formats may have more angled grout lines than standard field tiles, and a sealing schedule aligned with traffic and moisture exposure is important in wet applications.

A trapezoid tile is a four-sided geometric format in which one pair of opposite sides is parallel while the other is not. The mismatched sides produce an angular, asymmetric shape that creates movement and pattern when tiles are set together. In Cotto, the trapezoid format of Zia's Toltec shape suits kitchen backsplashes, shower walls, and accent surfaces where the geometry contributes to the overall design statement, while trapezoid zellige mosaics introduce a dynamic, shimmering glaze at a smaller scale.

The Stars and Cross is a traditional tile pattern popular across Moorish and Mediterranean architecture. Star and cross-shaped tile pieces interlock to create a continuous geometric field. At Zia, Stars and Cross formats are available in our cement and Cotto collections and can be featured in a standalone field or as an accent within a larger installation.

Yes. Combining a special shape tile with a square or rectangular shaped tile is a common approach in both residential and commercial installations. The special shape typically defines a specific zone, such as a shower floor, niche, or backsplash, within the larger space. Arrange both formats in a dry layout before setting to confirm the balance and ensure grout spacing stays consistent across the transition.

Yes, though suitability depends on the material rather than the shape. On shower floors, slip resistance can be increased by keeping grout spacing to a minimum of 1/8" and applying an anti-slip treatment after installation. At Zia, special shapes include hexagons, trapezoids, triangles (in our Cotto Allende line), and more. To review available shapes, materials, and colorways, browse the special shape offering and contact our team at info@ziatile.com or 310‑844‑1170 with any questions.

Special shape tiles require more layout planning than standard field tiles, since angled or interlocking edges must align precisely. A professional installer experienced with the complex installations and the specific material should confirm the layout in a dry run before setting any tile. Protective face and eye coverings are recommended when working with thinset, sealants, and grout. Review the Proposition 65 warnings before starting. Please have your contractor, designer, or installer confirm the square footage needed for your tile order. A professional should measure your installation area(s) and provide recommendations for overage. As a general rule, we recommend a minimum of 15% overage to account for cuts and curation. For specialty sets like Durango, Stars and Cross, and Oaxaca, edge cuts can affect the number of pieces needed, and additional overage may be best. For Cotto hexagon and zellige trapezoid mosaics, additional overage will allow for additional curation in highly varied tiles.
