Color variation in tile comes down to how a specific material is naturally formed, handmade or cut: glazed tiles shift in tone because heat and glaze application are never perfectly uniform, as seen in zellige or Cotto Allende. Natural stone, like Rosso Alicante marble, varies through veining formed over millions of years, and unglazed clay in our Cotto collection varies through tone, shape, and edge profile.

Yes, many of our materials with red colorways are well-suited for indoor and outdoor flooring. Our Red Clay Cotto is a popular choice to warm up a kitchen, working equally well in outdoor installations. Rosso Alicante marble is offered in large formats, up to 24x24 inches, making it ideal for larger areas. Please review the individual tile’s usage guidance to determine if it is viable for a floor installation, and contact our team with any material or installation-specific questions.

A grout closely matched to the tile lets it read as one continuous field, and also helps mitigate staining in unglazed materials like Red Clay Cotto. A high-contrast grout pops against the tile, with a lighter or darker grout line that emphasizes the layout’s graphic pattern. A grout between the two softens the pattern and holds up well on a high-traffic floor.

A running bond softens the grid and reads as more traditional, which suits a material like Red Clay Cotto, where tone shifts gently from tile to tile. A straight stack reads more structured and puts the tile's proportions front and center. With a handmade material like zellige, a simpler pattern highlights the tiles’ dynamic glaze rather than competes with a complex layout.

The difference comes down to the materiality of each tile type. Red zellige is a handmade material, where natural clay forms are hand-glazed and fired in a kiln, with chips, pits, and crazing as inherent characteristics across the surface. Red Clay Cotto, an unglazed terra cotta tile, shows variation through tone, shape, and edge profile, while glazed Lupe Cotto Allende is topped with a soft red glaze and fewer inconsistencies across the surface. Rosso Alicante is a natural Italian marble, quarried and cut to display veining formed over eons.

The care and maintenance of any red tile depends on the material rather than the color. As a general rule, regular sweeping or vacuuming removes the grit that would otherwise damage the surface underfoot. Clean tiles with a pH-neutral cleaner and avoid bleach, vinegar, and other acidic products, which can etch glazes and damage natural stone. Seal tiles on the schedule specified in each installation guide. Reseal more often in wet or heavily trafficked areas.

Please have your contractor, designer, or installer confirm the square footage needed for your tile order. A professional should measure the square footage and advise on overage for the specific project. A minimum of 15% overage accounts for curation and cuts. Handmade and natural stone materials may need up to 25% to account for pattern and veining matching across the installation.
