A staple in design for over 500 years, terrazzo originated in Venice, Italy, and has appeared in designs across the globe ever since. Historically, stone fragments were embedded into cement surfaces to create durable flooring. The material evolved through Renaissance interiors and later became a defining surface in Art Deco and Mid-Century Modern architecture. Zia’s authentic terrazzo tiles bring old-world craftsmanship to modern spaces in a carefully designed collection spanning speckled solids and bold patterns for contemporary use.

Our terrazzo tiles are produced through a controlled molding and pressing process. Crushed natural marble and stone aggregates are set into a steel mold, liquid cement is poured over the aggregate layer, and the tile is hydraulically pressed into a powdered concrete base. Once set, the surface is ground to expose the aggregate distribution, then polished to a smooth finish. This results in variation at the aggregate level, so no two tiles ever share identical distribution patterns.

Yes. While terrazzo’s aggregates suggest a low-maintenance finish, terrazzo tiles are porous and require specific care. Terrazzo must be sealed before and after grouting to protect the material from moisture and potential staining. For interior installations, we recommend 511 Porous Plus Sealer and Fila Matte Finish Protective Wax. For outdoor spaces, we recommend 511 Porous Plus Sealer alone.

Using a pH-neutral cleaner and avoiding acidic or abrasive products will help preserve the material and prevent staining. Terrazzo should be resealed at least every one to two years, or as often as needed, depending on traffic and wear. For areas exposed to moisture, more frequent resealing may be required. Always reseal in accordance with the sealant manufacturer's instructions.

Cleaning terrazzo tile correctly starts with regular sweeping or vacuuming to prevent surface abrasion from debris. Clean spills immediately to prevent absorption or staining. For routine cleaning, use warm water with a pH-neutral cleaner such as Miracle Sealants pH Neutral Tile and Stone Cleaner. For heavier buildup, use Miracle Sealants Heavy Duty Cleaner (Acid Substitute). Do not use bleach, vinegar, or acidic cleaners, as these dull the surface over time.

Zia strongly recommends professional installation due to the material's inherent variation and porosity. 

Before installation:

• Open all tile boxes and thoughtfully mix tiles to evenly distribute aggregate variation 

During installation:

• Set tiles using a high-quality medium-bed thinset over a properly cured substrate
• Wet the back of each tile before setting to support adhesion
• Press tiles into place by hand; do not use a mallet
• Allow full curing before sealing and grouting

For sealing and grouting:

• Apply 511 Porous Plus Sealer before grouting
• Grout in small 2’x2’ sections using Mapei Flexcolor CQ grout and wipe clean as you go
• Complete with Fila Matte Wax for interior applications or an additional coat of 511 Porous Plus for exterior use

The 24x24 format suits open floors and expansive walls where fewer grout joints produce a cleaner, less interrupted surface.

Terrazzo tile and marble tile are both made of stone materials, but differ greatly in their production processes and appearance. Terrazzo is produced by embedding crushed marble and stone aggregates into a cement base, which is then hydraulically pressed and ground to reveal the speckled aggregate-dotted surface.
