A square tile is any tile whose length and width are equal. The shape has been crafted in ceramics, zellige, stone, cement, glass, and Roman mosaics for centuries, and covers a wide range of sizes, from small square tiles at 2x2 to large-format 24x24 field tiles. Each material brings a distinct color palette, finish, and design perspective.

Square tile works across nearly every residential and commercial application, due to the versatility and timelessness of the shape. Common installations include floors, bathroom walls, shower walls, fireplace surrounds, and square backsplash tile in kitchens. For exterior floor applications, consider the climate when selecting a material, as not all square tile options are approved for outdoor use or freeze/thaw climates. Smaller formats like 2x2 mosaics or 4x4 tiles are popular choices for shower floors and detail work, while larger formats, like 12x12 and 24x24, can anchor open floors and expansive walls.

Square tile is timeless because the format carries no single design style. Squared materials appear in Roman bath complexes, Moroccan riads, and mid-century modern interiors. Our curated yet expansive collection features materials that have served as staples for centuries, each introducing a distinct perspective to a design.

The decision between a square tile versus rectangular tile comes down to design, not durability. Both formats work equally well on floors and walls. Rectangular formats elongate a surface and direct the eye along the longer axis. Square formats distribute visual weight evenly and let the material's color and texture carry the room. The right choice depends on the proportions of the space and the desired visual effect.

Contrasting grout amplifies the grid of square tiles. The effect ranges from a quiet tonal shift to a bold, graphic pattern, depending on the specific grout color and contrast level. With porous unglazed materials like Cotto and cement tile, contrasting grout carries a staining risk, and tonal grout should be applied carefully by hand or with a grout bag. On glazed surfaces, sealing is required in wet areas regardless of grout color, and the recommended sealing steps vary by material. Always seal square tile according to the installation instructions, whether in dry spaces or in areas exposed to moisture, such as pools, spas, and showers. Installers working with zellige, thinset, sealants, or grout should wear protective face and eye coverings in accordance with California Prop 65. A small square tile at or below 2x2 inches is called a square mosaic tile. When the individual units are hand-cut stone, the traditional term is tesserae, from the Latin word for the small square pieces used in Roman and Byzantine mosaic work. Our Roman Mosaics collection features Italian marble hand-cut into tesserae squares by artisans in Italy, mesh-backed for installation. We also offer zellige mosaics in 2x2-inch squares, 1x1-inch ceramics, and our newest collection of 1x1-inch recycled glass mosaics.

Whether to set a square tile aligned in a traditional grid or offset depends on the material and the space. Grid-on-grid suits contemporary interiors and emphasizes the regularity of the format, especially when a contrasting grout highlights the precision of the installation. A staggered offset reads as more artisanal and helps distribute natural size variation in handmade materials. Regardless of pattern, blend tiles from all boxes and lay the full installation out dry before setting to best plan the composition.

Small square tile formats like 2x2 and 4x4 work well in compact spaces, on shower floors, and in detail or accent work. The smaller sizes are also easier to install on curved surfaces. Mid-range formats, such as our 8x8-inch squares, are versatile across floors and walls in both residential and commercial settings. Larger formats like 12x12 and 24x24 suit open floors and expansive walls, where fewer grout lines read as cleaner and more minimal. As a general rule, the tile size should be proportional to the surface it covers, though a larger installation of smaller tiles makes a strong statement.

Our square tile offering spans a wide range of colors across multiple materials. In zellige, square formats are available in a curated selection of colorways, including whites, greens, blues, earthy neutrals, jewel tones, and more, each producing a distinct result depending on the glaze and the light conditions of the space. In ceramics, the square collection includes matte, satin, and glossy finishes across a broad palette spanning clean whites, deep blacks, and bold accent colors. Stone tiles offer a range of earthy neutrals across limestone, Belgian Bluestone, or Cantera; while terrazzo's square shapes introduce interest with aggregates in both speckled solid and patterned designs. Cement tile squares are available in both solid colors and patterned designs. Please have your contractor, designer, or installer confirm the square footage needed for your tile order. A professional should measure the length and width of the application surface in feet, multiplying to get the total square footage. For a floor, measure the room. For a wall, measure each section separately and add the totals for the total area. Once the total square footage is known, add a minimum overage of 15 percent to account for cuts, curation, and any tiles set aside during installation. For handmade materials like zellige, where color variation is characteristic of the tile, plan for up to 25 percent overage for a more uniform result.
