THE CANTERA STORY

Cantera translates to “quarry,” describing a stone that has formed from volcanic material over eons. Celebrated in Mexico everywhere from ancient Aztec structures to San Miguel de Allende’s most famous cathedral, this treasured rock is associated with global architecture that makes an impact. Offered in a range of natural colorways, Cantera is cut into tiles fit for indoor and outdoor installations.

GET TONED

Viewing one – or even a few – Cantera tiles gives a glimpse into the amazing variation found in this natural material. While we recognize the beauty in each tile, we also understand our clients may want tones that are slightly different. Enter color-enhancing sealers. Before beginning your installation, consider which sealer is the right choice for your desired aesthetic. Whether you love the tiles in their current state or prefer to strengthen the color tone a bit, we recommend testing any sealers on a few sample tiles first.

THE PERFECT SEALER

If anyone has an eagle eye for color, it’s our team. We’ve taken the time to test the most reputable and widely available color enhancing sealers so that you can achieve your desired results. Note these are far from the only reliable sealers on the market, so feel free to look beyond this list and be sure to test samples prior to your installation.

SEALER OPTIONS BY COLORWAY

From example 1, not yet touched, to 9, with the most dramatic color enhancing sealer, this important design choice is yours. While each tile should be cleaned prior to installation, pause to consider whether you prefer your tiles as they are, which aligns with standard sealers 3-5. If you’d like a deeper or darker tone, options 6-9 will give each tile a boost while maintaining the stones’ coveted variation.

READY. SET. SEAL.

Once your sealer is selected, you can begin the installation process. First, the tiles should be cleaned with a pH neutral cleaner. After your thin set has cured and your tiles have fully dried, you may opt to apply a standard or color enhancing sealer prior to grouting your installation. Let the enhancer cure according to the manufacturer’s instructions, then proceed with our Cantera installation guide by applying a grout release such as the 511 Porous Plus Sealer before grout, then a top coat sealer such as the Fila Matte Wax after grouting is complete. A color enhancer does add one extra step at the beginning of the installation process, so follow the guide closely after application for best results.

Please have your installers follow Zia’s installation guide very carefully to ensure a successful and lasting installation.
