Cotto Allende

Cotto Allende, Zia’s glazed terra cotta tile, is produced near San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, a UNESCO World Heritage city with a long tradition of ceramic and clay production. The collection is inspired by and named for this special city. Allende also means “beyond” in Spanish, which reflects the glazed finish that distinguishes this line from our unglazed Cotto. The local clay and established kiln practices shape the density, tonal range, and surface character of each tile.

Cotto Allende tile begins with natural Mexican clay pressed into molds, sun-dried, and high-fired in kilns. While traditional terra cotta tile is left unglazed, Cotto Allende is topped with a pigmented glaze, which creates a smoother, more sealed surface with subtle crazing and more defined color saturation while retaining the inherent variation expected from handmade tile.

Yes, while Cotto Allende is glazed, it must be sealed. This applies to all installations, including high-traffic areas, showers, pools, and spas. Use 511 Porous Plus only. Do not use Fila Matte Wax on Cotto Allende.

For proper care:

• Seal before grouting and after grouting in areas exposed to moisture, such as showers, pools, and spas 
• Reseal regularly, and more frequently in high-traffic or moisture-exposed areas
• Use only pH-neutral cleaning products
• Avoid acidic or abrasive cleaners that can damage the glaze or highlight crazing

Over time, the surface develops a natural patina as a material response to use and environment. This is a defining characteristic of glazed clay tile and should be embraced.

Cleaning Cotto Allende correctly starts with regular sweeping or vacuuming to remove debris that can damage the tile’s surface. For wet cleaning, use warm water with a pH-neutral cleaner such as Miracle Sealants Tile and Stone Cleaner, applied with a soft cloth or mop. For stubborn residue, use a non-acidic cleaner such as Miracle Sealants Heavy Duty Cleaner (Acid Substitute). Avoid abrasive tools or pads that can scratch the glazed surface.

Installing Cotto Allende tile requires a professional installer experienced with handmade glazed materials. Before installation, blend tiles from all boxes and dry-lay the full layout to distribute variation evenly.

During installation:

• Begin by blending tiles from every box to distribute natural variation
• Use a high-quality medium-bed thinset mortar for proper adhesion
• Wet the back of each tile before setting to reduce suction
• Seal with 511 Porous Plus only; wax is not recommended.
• Set tiles with ⅛" grout joints and  Mapei Flexcolor CQ grout

Seal with 511 Porous Plus before grouting and reseal regularly in high-traffic and wet areas such as showers, pools, and spas. Use pH-neutral cleaners to avoid surface damage. Subtle crazing is an inherent characteristic of the material and does not affect structural integrity. Over time, the tile develops a natural patina that enhances its visual impact.

Cotto Allende pairs well with materials that complement its tonal range and surface movement. Beginning with tile, consider the scale of the additional pieces and whether a consistent size or larger tile may suit the space, while being mindful of the tiles’ potentially differing thicknesses. Cotto Allende’s glazed finish and subtle crazing also read well against neutral wall surfaces such as plaster or lime wash. 

Natural materials, including wood and stone, align with the clay base without competing with the tile's surface variation. A grout color that closely matches the tile color maintains visual continuity and reduces contrast across joints, which is particularly important with Cotto Allende, given that contrasting grout accentuates crazing.

Cotto Allende suits contemporary interiors because the glazed finish produces a surface that reads as refined rather than rustic. Paired with clean-lined materials such as glass, metal, or concrete, the tile holds its material character without overpowering the space. A grout color matched closely to the tile at consistent ⅛" joints keeps the surface reading as considered and controlled. Limiting the tile to a defined area, such as a single floor plane, feature wall, or wet space, preserves the balance between material character and the surrounding palette, while an allover Cotto Allende installation is impressive in its subtle variation and monochromatic scale.
